Police had to use a “rolling traffic stop” on Interstate 79 Monday afternoon near Mt. Morris, Pa., to catch a 53-year-old Fairmont man who had been wanted since late last year on drug charges.

“No one was injured,” when Charles A. Brown III was finally pulled over, said Alex Neville, a deputy U.S. marshal.

The U.S. Marshals Service had been looking for Brown since he was indicted on March 24 by a federal grand jury in Clarksburg, said J.C. Raffety, the U.S. marshal for the Northern District of West Virginia.

Brown was indicted on three felony counts involving the distribution of crack cocaine.

Earlier Monday, deputy marshals tracked Brown to the Wheeling and St. Clairsville, Ohio, area. They later followed him to Waynesburg on I-79 where they began to close in on him.

“Pennsylvania State Police started to assist us there,” said Neville.

Brown continued to drive south toward Fairmont, but with the help of West Virginia State Police, he was finally stopped just inside the state line.

Police did not find any drugs or weapons when they searched his vehicle, Neville said.

During the search for Brown, police in Fairmont and Bridgeport cooperated closely with the U.S. Marshals Service, Neville said.

Brown was initially arrested by West Virginia State Police during a traffic stop on Nov. 23. Police found cocaine in his truck. They also found an undisclosed amount of crack and powder cocaine during a subsequent search of his residence.

On Dec. 11, Parkersburg police arrested Brown during another traffic stop, Neville said. At that time, police found a small amount of cocaine, known as an “eight ball,” in the vehicle.

Brown failed to appear in Wood County court on Jan. 3, resulting in the issuance of fugitive warrants.

State Police then decided to refer the charges to federal authorities, resulting in the March indictments against Brown, Neville said.

Brown is now in custody, awaiting an initial appearance next week before U.S. Magistrate Judge John Kaull.
