Fatality investigated

Monongalia County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a fatality that occurred during a vehicle accident Tuesday night.

The accident occurred on Route 19 north of Rivesville just across the county line in Mon County.

Emergency personnel along with the deputies responded to the accident, which happened in Arnettsville near the United Methodist Church at approximately 4:30 p.m.

The vehicle, an unidentified station wagon, was traveling south on Route 19 when it struck a Ford Ranger in the rear, according to the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department. The vehicle continued to travel south before leaving the road. It then struck several trees and caught fire, according to the police.

The automobile was fully engulfed in flames when emergency crews arrived on scene shortly after the initial call. The vehicle’s lone occupant was pronounced dead at the scene.

At approximately 6:40 p.m., the body was removed from the charred shell of the automobile. Fire damage from the accident could be seen approximately 40 feet high on the tree that the vehicle struck. The victim will be sent to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Charleston for identification, according to police.

Crews from the Rivesville Volunteer Fire Department, along with the Baxter VFD and River Road VFD responded to the scene, as did Mon County EMS personnel.

Traffic was rerouted around the accident scene for about two and a half hours.
