Tireless worker Russell Bonasso dies at 87

Russell Bonasso wrote two books in the later years of his life, profits from which went to provide scholarships for students whose families had been involving in mining coal.

There have been few Marion Countians who were involved in as many things or assisted as many people in need than Russell Bonasso, who passed away Thursday after suffering an aneurism back in March.

In thinking of Russ, who was 87, one’s thoughts automatically turn to a warm-hearted person with a great love of his fellow man — a person who literally was not content unless he was helping people in need.

Russ — that’s what he always preferred to be called — has an easy explanation for his looking after others.

“The scripture of St. Luke tells us that ‘to whom much is given, of him shall be much required.”

How appropriate it was back in December of 2006 when Fairmont State University awarded Bonasso with an honorary doctorate of philanthropy degree although illness prevented him from being there to accept it.
