FAIRMONT – Patrol officers with the Fairmont Police Department found themselves in a car chase leading to Interstate 79 South through several counties July 8.
According to a press release from the department, “on July 8, patrol officers with the Fairmont Police Department received a stolen vehicle complaint from a resident on Locust Avenue. The vehicle, described as a maroon Chrysler 200 was spotted later in the day driving on Pennsylvania Avenue.”
Police tried to stop the vehicle, however it failed to pull over and officers initiated a pursuit.
“During the pursuit, officers from several area agencies including the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, West Virginia State Police, White Hall Police Department, Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, Bridgeport Police Department, Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, Weston Police Department and others assisted.”
The chase ended on a dead end road in Weston, where the driver – who was alone – was taken into custody and the vehicle was recovered.
State Police charged 21-year-old Damien Connell, of Baxter, with fleeing with reckless indifference, among other charges.
“Charges from the Fairmont Police Department and other agencies are pending.”
During the pursuit, which began around 12:35 p.m. according to the Marion County 911 Center, the police and dispatchers reported the vehicle driving at more than 100 miles per hour down I-79 South.
