FAIRMONT — Authorities charged a woman with felony child neglect after, police said, a 1-year-old she was babysitting was found left alone on the sidewalk of a “very busy” intersection Sept. 15 in Fairmont.

The Fairmont Police Department charged 22-year-old Taylor Shaye Cox, of P.O. Box 255, Fairview, with child neglect creating risk of injury.

A Fairmont Police Department patrolman responded to the area of Virginia Avenue and 10th Street after a call came in about an abandoned child.

The patrolman founds the toddler on the sidewalk, alone, the complaint states. The child “climbed down 20-25 steps, crossed the very busy intersection of Virginia Avenue and came to a stop at the intersection of 10th Street and Virginia Avenue, where he was located, while under the care of babysitter Taylor Cox.”

The complaint states that Cox told the child’s mother that would babysit the child while the mother was away.

Two witnesses heard Cox say she would babysit the child, the complaint states.

Court records show Cox’s bail was set at $3,012, which was posted.
