West Fairmont’s baseball team gave Elkins its first loss of the year Friday, topping the Tigers, 6-1.
Brent Dodrill earned the win on the mound limiting the Tigers to only two hits (both in the first inning) and one run. He went six innings and struck out 10.
Mark Gardner finished the final inning allowing no hits and struking out one.
Joey Buonaiuto led West at the plate going 3-for-4, including a solo home run. Dodrill had a pair of hits, including a double and a pair of RBI. Gardner drove in a run with a single and Brad Dodrill and Aaron Fetty also had hits in the game.
The Polar Bears (3-2, 3-2 in the North Central Athletic Conference) will host Meadville, Pa. today at 6 p.m.

HEDGESVILLE — West Fairmont’s softball team opened up the Hedgeville tournament with a pair of wins, dowing St. Maria Goretti (Md.) 11-1 and Musselman, 3-2.
The Bears pounded out 19 hits in the win over St. Maria Goretti, led by Stephanie Woods’ two hits and four RBI and Mary Donato’s 3-for-4 day at the plate.
Amy King also had a pair of hits and two RBI, Elizabeth Hendrixson, Emily Keener and Jenn Williams all had two hits. A.J. Harker, Chelsea Garcia, Lisa Cattafesta, Ashley Cramer and Bridget Ford all had hits in the game.
Keener was the winning pitcher. She went three innings and gave up one run on two hits and struck out six. Ford pitched the final three innings in relief giving up two hits and striking out six.
In the second game Keener came back with a seven inning, four hit, 12 strikeout performace to lead the Bears by Musselman.
King led the way at the plate with two hits and a pair of RBI. Wiliams had a hit and RBI, Hendrixson had another two-hit game and BethAnn Haymond singled.
The Bears (7-1) will continue in the single-elimination tournament today.
