West Virginia’s Doug Nelms was named Monday as the Big East baseball Player of the Week.

The senior shortstop from Bristol, Va., helped the Mountaineers clinch a berth in the conference tournament.

That came in a three-game sweep at Cincinnati, the first such achievement on the road by WVU since joining the league in 1996.

Nelms had 12 hits in 22 at-bats for a .545 average last week. He also had three doubles, three RBI and three runs scored.

In the process, he boosted his batting average from .309 to .332.

Freshman Corey Young of Seton Hall was named Big East Pitcher of the Week. The left-hander held 11th-ranked Notre Dame to just one earned run in a complete-game effort.

WVU (33-18, 13-11 in the Big East) returns to action at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday in a non-conference game against Akron (15-32, 8-15 in the MAC) at Hawley Field.
