Region I golf meet

West Fairmont's Matt Pellillo earned medalist honors at the Region I Golf Championship Monday at the Preston County Country Club Golf Course.

Years of practice have finally paid off for West Fairmont’s Matt Pellillo.

After falling short in the regional golf competitions the last three years, Pellillo will finish his senior season at the state meet next Tuesday and Wednesday on Oglebay Park’s Speidel Golf Course.

The rest of his team, however, just missed out on placing in the top two, which would have earned the Polar Bears a trip to Wheeling.

Instead, it was John Marshall and University High that prevailed on top of the team standings Monday. The Monarchs took the Region I Golf Championship with a 325 and the Hawks followed with a 326. West and Morgantown tied for third at 327.

“I felt bad for my guys,” first-year Polar Bear coach Jonathan Denham said. “You hate to miss out on states by one shot.”

Pellillo enjoyed the low round of the tournament, carding a 3-over-par 75 (38-37) at the Par 72 Preston County Country Club Golf Course.

Joining Pellillo as the top four qualifying individuals, who are not on the top two teams, is Wheeling Park’s Alex Saseen (76), Univer-sity’s Mike John-son (77), and Mor-gantown’s Brice Pellichoni (79) and Michael Filandino (80).

Pellillo had played at the Kingwood course twice during the regular season, registering an 81 at the season-opening Preston Open and a nine-hole score of 40 during a NCAC match.

“Matt is the hardest worker on this team,” Denham said about last year’s NCAC Golfer of the Year. “He’s had an up and down season, but all of his hard work has paid off. I’m proud of him.”

Also for the Polar Bears, Mark Gardner just missed out on earning his second straight ticket to the state meet after firing an 81. Conn Laughlin shot an 85, Matt McLellan an 86 and Trey Satterfield a 95.

East Fairmont, which totaled a 354, was led by Jacob Hawkins who finished on the outside looking in with an 81. Jess Ferrell and Joey Potesta each had a 90, while Wyatt Michael added a 93.

North Marion was three shots behind the Bees with a 357 as Ryan Moore led the charge with an 82. Cody Hockenberry followed with an 89, Dylan Alasky a 90 and Evan Harbert a 96.
