MORGANTOWN – West Virginia University wide receiver Kevin White received some more All-American love on Wednesday when he was named to the Sporting News first team and to the Football Writers Association of America second team while wide receiver Mario Alford was named first-team kick returner of the writers’ team.
White has now been named to 12 All-America teams this season.
White set a school record with seven straight games of 100 or more receiving yards to start the season and has 1,318 receiving yards this year, the second most in a single season in school history.
Alford averaged 27.7 yards per kickoff return with two for touchdowns, one of them 100 yards.
• Defensive end Larry Jefferson from College Park, Georgia, by way of Itawamba Community College in Fulton, Mississippi, has become West Virginia’s first mid-year signee.
As a sophomore, he registered 35 tackles, including three for a loss, and as a freshman he had 32 tackles with 5.5 sacks and 13.5 for a loss.
The 6-5, 230-pound Jefferson was also offered by California, Iowa State, Kansas State, Kentucky, Maryland, Miami, Missouri and South Florida.
• Junior forward Kailey Utley of the West Virginia University women’s soccer team earned National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Scholar All-East Region honors. Additionally, sophomore defender Kadeisha Buchanan was named the Canadian U-20 Player of the Year for the second straight season.
Senior Andy Bevin of the West Virginia University men’s soccer team has been named to the NSCAA Scholar All-American first team.
